Cycle Across America

Long before any of the other trips on this site, there was this one. In May 2010 I dipped a rear wheel in the Atlantic at Yorktown, Virginia, pointed a loaded touring bike west, and didn’t stop until it touched the Pacific in Oregon, 73 days and 4,227.16 miles later, following the TransAmerica Trail the whole way.

This wasn’t a long weekend away — it was the trip everything since has been measured against. I posted every single day of it at the time, and people actually followed along and left comments, which felt like a small miracle in 2010. I’ve kept every one of those original posts and preserved the real comments people left underneath them, day by day, exactly as they happened.

Fair warning: it’s a lot. Five posts before I even left, then seventy-three numbered days across Virginia, Kentucky, Kansas, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho and Oregon, a few extra stops once I reached the coast, and a short reflection to close it out. Settle in.

Every dot is a real day on the trail, placed from the towns named in that day's post — click one to jump straight to it. Hollow-ringed dots are rest days along the way. The lighter branch up the coast is the post-ride detour to Portland. A few days without a clearly named stop are interpolated between the nearest confirmed ones.
